Enzyme patterns in two species of Xenopus and their hybrids☆
[摘要] DifferencesintheisozymepatternsofXenopuslaevisandXenopusmullerihavebeenutilizedtoexaminetheexpressionofallelesofbothspeciesinhybridanimals.MitochondrialMDHandtetrazoliumoxidasephenotypeswereexaminedduringthedevelopmentofnon-hybridembryosofeachspeciesandofreciprocalhybrids.Earlystagesofthehybridsresembletheenzymephenotypeofthematernalparent.AppearanceofpaternalenzymetakesplacejustpriortotheactivefeedingtadpolestageforbothmitochondrialMDHandoxidase.Thematernaleffectdisappearsshortlythereafterinearlyfeedingtadpoles,atwhichpointreciprocalhybridshaveidenticalisozymepatterns.Thereisnoevidenceforapredominanceofonespeciesovertheother.Examinationoffeedingtadpolesandadulttoadsindicatesthatbothlaevisandmulleriexpressionisstable.TheappearanceofpaternalmitochondrialMDHdoesnotcorrespondtothetimewhenothermitochondrialcomponentsbegintoincreaseinXenopus.MultiplebandsofMDHinbothspeciesandofoxidaseinlaevisareprobablynotduetotheaggregationofsubunitsproducedbydifferentallelesatthesamelocus.Thereisnoevidencefortheformationof“hybridâ€moleculesconsistingofsubunitsofbothspecies.
