The respiratory function of gills in the larvae of Amblystoma punctatum☆
[摘要] AstudyhasbeenmadeoftheeffectofgillremovalontheoxygenconsumptionofdevelopingAmblystomapunctatumlarvae.Inwatersaturatedwith21%,15%,and10%oxygen,therateofoxygenconsumptionofgill-lessanimalsisindistinguishablefromthatofnormalindividuals.Atsaturationwith5%oxygen,respirationofgill-lessanimalsislessthanthatofcontrolswithgills.Althoughgillsmayfunctioninrespiratoryexchange,theyarenotessentialfornormaloxygenuptakeunderordinarycircumstances.IndirectevidenceindicatesthatthehemoglobinofAmblystomablood,atthestagesstudied,haslimitedsignificanceinoxygentransport.
