Sperm-induced protrusions in sea urchin oocytes: A study of phase separation and mixing in living cytoplasm
[摘要] ThephenomenadescribedbyAlbertsson(1960)asoccurringinphasesystemsareregardedasusefulmodelsfortheunderstandingofbiologicalstructure.Asurveyisgivenofresultsinrespecttophaseseparationandpartitionwhichareobservedinfertilizedseaurchineggsafterpretreatmentwithlowdosesoftrypsin.Uponinseminationofseaurchinoocytes,thespermatozoainducetheformationofprotrusions(receptioncones).TheseconsistofgroundcytoplasmandformaphaseIstrictlyseparatedfromamoreproximalphaseII,richindispersedendoplasmicvesicles.TherestofthecytoplasmisrichingranularcomponentsandmayberegardedasaphaseIII.Thisviewissubstantiatedbyobservationsontheremixingofcomponentsthatoccursduringthewithdrawaloftheprotrusion.Thisisaprocesswhichisdrivenbythetendencytoremixandbyactivemovementsoccurringintheprotrusions.Thesuggestionismadethatthegroundcytoplasmconsistsofseveralphasesthatundernormalconditionsaremiscibletovaryingextentsaccordingtotheconditionsprevailing.Theformationofprotrusionswithensuingreversiblephaseseparationisregardedasduetoabasicprotectivemechanismoperatinginthecytoplasm.
