Experimental production of perfect cyclopia in the chick by means of LiCl, with a survey of the literature on cyclopia produced experimentally by various means☆
[摘要] AttemptstoinducecyclopiainthechickbyplacingLiClorLiCl+NaCldirectlyontheembryothroughashellwindowfailed.AttemptstoinducecyclopiainthechickexplantedtoamodifiedSprattculturewith11.8mMLiClreplacingtheequivalentofNaClproducedmanyembryoswithunbilateralizedforebrains.Cyclopeaneyes,ifpresent,didnotdevelopfarenoughtoinduceanoverlyinglenspalisadingorinvagination,nortodeveloppigmentationoftheirown—alternativecriteriaimposedforthecertaindemonstrationofcyclopia.Earlysomitestageexplants(1–7somites)oftenshowedinhibitedbilateralizationofopticvesiclesduringthefirstdayandthenanactualregressionofbilateralizationandsometimesadegenerationoflateralopticvesiclesduringtheseconddayofculture.SevenperfectcyclopeanembryoswereproducedbyNewtechniquecultureswithaddedLiCl,explantationbeingatprimitivestreak(Hamburger-Hamiltonstage4).Onecasewasobtainedon11.8mMLiCland6caseson15.7mMLiCl.Heavylensectodermalpalisadingovertheopticvesicle(5cases)andactuallensinvagination(2cases)weretheidentifyingcriteriaforcyclopeaneyes.Theliteratureonproductionofcyclopiabyallexperimentalmeansissummarizedandevaluatedinanappendix.
