Cranial Neural Crest Cells Contribute to Connective Tissue in Cranial Muscles in the Anuran Amphibian, Bombina orientalis
[摘要] Thecontributionofcranialneuralcrestcellstothedevelopmentandpatterningofcranialmusclesinamphibianswasinvestigatedinthephylogeneticallybasalandmorphologicallygeneralizedfrog,Bombinaorientalis.Experimentalmethodsincludedfluorescentmarkingofpremigratorycranialneuralcrestandextirpationofindividualmigratorystreams.Neuralcrestcellscontributedtotheconnectivetissuecomponent,butnotthemyofibers,ofmanylarvalmuscleswithinthefirsttwobranchialarches(mandibularandhyoid),andcomplexchangesinmusclepatterningfollowedneuralcrestextirpation.Connectivetissuecomponentsofindividualmusclesofeitherarchoriginatefromtheparticularcrestmigratorystreamthatisassociatedwiththatarch,andthisrelationshipismaintainedregardlessofthesegmentalidentity—orembryonicderivation—ofassociatedskeletalcomponents.Thesedevelopmentalrelationsdefineapatternofsegmentationintheheadoflarvalanuransthatissimilartothatpreviouslydescribedinthedomesticchicken,theonlyvertebratethathasbeenthoroughlyinvestigatedinthisrespect.Thefundamentalroleoftheneuralcrestinpatterningskeletonandmusculaturemayrepresentaprimitivefeatureofcranialdevelopmentinvertebrates.Moreover,thecorrespondingdevelopmentalprocessesandcellfatesappeartobeconservedevenwhenmajorevolutionaryinnovations—suchasthenovelcartilagesandmusclesofanuranlarvae—resultinmajordifferencesincranialform.
