A clonal system of differential gene activity in Drosophila☆
[摘要] Thepatternsofeyepigmentvariegationintwocasesofpositioneffect(oneinDrosophilavirilisandtheotherinD.melanogaster)wereshowntobelaiddownintheimaginaleyediskduringtheendofthefirstlarvalinstar.ThetimingofthisdeterminativeeventwasmadepossiblebycomparingthevariegationpatternswiththesizeandshapeoftwinspotsintheadulteyeformedbytheX-rayinductionofsomaticexchangeattheendofthefirstinstar.InD.virilisthevariegationpatternsandthetwinspotswerecomparedindifferentflies;whereas,inD.melanogaster,aschemewasdevisedsothatthecomparisoncouldbemadeinoneandthesameeye.Thevariegationpatternwasshowntobeclonal;therefore,theinformationcontainedinthisdeterminativeeventwaspassedontothedaughtersomaticcellsforanumberofcellgenerationsuntilthedifferentiationoftheeyewascompleteandpigmentsynthesisinitiated.AlthoughgrowthwasmarkedlyinhibitedinlarvaefedonmediumcontainingactinomycinDduringthefirstinstar,suchtreatmentdidnotaffectthepatternofposition-effectvariegation.
