Morphogenetic agents from unfertilized eggs of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus
[摘要] Previousexperiencepointstotheconclusionthatspecificmorphogeneticagentsformthebasisofdifferentiationintheearlydevelopmentofseaurchins.Attemptshavethereforebeenmadetoisolatesuchagentsfromtheunfertilizedeggsoftheseaurchin,Paracentrotuslividus.Byion-exchangechromatographyonDowex50W-X2ofpartlypurifiedegghomogenatesafractionwasisolatedwhichshowedananimalizingactiononwholeeggsandembryos.Whentestedonanimalandvegetalhalves,isolatedinthe16-and32-cellstages,theanimalizingeffectwasconsiderablyincreased.Thefractioncausedadefiniteextensionoftheciliarytuftinanimalhalves,anditwascapableofinducingadifferentiationtoalmostnormalpluteionvegetalhalves.Atreatmentfor2hourswasfoundsufficienttoinducetheeffectifitwasappliedduringtheperiodofcompetence,i.e.,thefirst6hoursaftertheoperation.Asecondfractionelutedfromthecolumnincloseproximitytotheanimalizingonecausedavegetalizationwhich,however,wassomewhatweaker,particularlywhentestedonwholeeggsandembryos.Whenanimalhalveswereexposedtoanimalizingandvegetalizingfractionsmixedincertainproportion,aneutralizationoftheireffectswasobserved.
