Refinement of wingless Expression by a Wingless- and Notch-Responsive Homeodomain Protein, Defective Proventriculus
[摘要] Patternformationduringanimaldevelopmentisofteninducedbyextracellularsignalingmolecules,knownasmorphogens,whicharesecretedfromlocalizedsources.DuringwingdevelopmentinDrosophila,Wingless(Wg)isactivatedbyNotchsignalingalongthedorsal–ventralboundaryofthewingimaginaldiscandactsasamorphogentoorganizegeneexpressionandcellgrowth.ExpressionofwgisrestrictedtoanarrowstripebyWgitself,repressingitsownexpressioninadjacentcells.Thisrefinementofwgexpressionisessentialforspecificationofthewingmargin.Here,weshowthatahomeodomainprotein,Defectiveproventriculus(Dve),mediatestherefinementofwgexpressioninboththewingdiscandembryonicproventriculus,wheredveexpressionrequiresWgsignaling.Ourresultsprovideevidenceforafeedbackmechanismthatestablishesthewg-expressingdomainthroughtheactionofaWg-inducedgeneproduct.
