Effect of Surgical Removal of Impacted Third Molars on Trismus Value
[摘要] BackgroundandObjective:Surgicalextractionofimpactedthirdmolarsisusuallyaccompaniedwithinflammatoryreactionswhichresultinpain,swellingandtrismus.Thepurposeofthisstudywastoevaluatetheeffectofdifferentpre-and-inter-surgicalvariablessuchasage,gender,temporomandibulardisorders(TMD),typeofimpaction,rootmorphologyandexperienceofsurgeononthemaximummouthopeningaftersurgicalextractionofimpactedthirdmolars.MaterialsandMethods:Inthisprospectivestudyweincludedseventysixpatientswithimpactedlowerorupperthirdmolarinthisstudy.Pre-and-persurgicalvariableswererecordedthroughaquestionnaire.Degreeoftrismuswasevaluatedthroughmaximuminterincisalmouthopeningbeforeand48hoursaftersurgery.DatawasanalyzedusingT-pairedinSPSS.15software.Results:Theminimumandmaximuminterincisalopeningsbeforesurgerywere,respectively,22mmand65mmwithanaverageof47.1±8.5mm.Twodaysafteroperation,themaximuminterincisalopeningwas62mm,andtheminimumwas8mmwithanaverageof28.5±6.2mm(plt;0.05).Noneofthevariablesexceptrootmorphologyhadanysignificantcorrelationwithmaximuminterincisalopening.Howevertrismuswaslowerinpatientsoperatedwithprofessors(attendants)thanpostgraduatestudents(pgt;0.05).Inpatientswhoweretreatedbypostgraduatestudentswaslowerthanthatofundergraduatestudents(pgt;0.05).TrismuswashighinTMDpatients.Conclusion:Trismuswassignificantlyhigherinpatientswhohadthirdmolarswithseparateanddivergentroots.
