First report of Brachypotherium Roger, 1904 (Rhinocerotidae, Mammalia) in the Middle Miocene of Greece
[摘要] ThepresentarticleisdealingwithsomerhinocerotidteethfromtheMiddleMiocenemammallocalityChryssavgi(CHR),whichissituatedintheMygdoniaBasin(Macedonia,Greece).ThematerialwasincorrectlydescribedearlierasDicerospachygnathus(Psarianos,1958)orDicerorhinusorientalis(Dimopoulos,1972)andconsideredasLateMiocenetoEarlyPlioceneinage.ThemorphologicalcharactersoftheCHRrhinocerotidanditscomparisonwiththeEurasianonesindicatethatitbelongstoBrachypotheriumbrachypus(Lartet,1851).Thecorrelationofthestudiedmaterialtothelocalstratigraphy,aswellastothemicromammalianfauna,foundinCHR,suggestsaLateAstaracianage,MN7+8.ThepresenceofthetaxoninCHRcorrespondstofirstoccurrenceofBrachypotheriumRoger,1904inGreecefromwherewaspreviouslyunknown.ThegeographicandbiostratigraphicoccurrenceofB.brachypusintheEasternMediterraneanregionisalsodiscussed.ThespeciesisquitecommoninTurkeybutrareintheBalkans,knownfromthelocalitiesofAhmatovo,BulgariaandChryssavgi,Greece.ItmainlyoccursintheLateOrleaniantoAstaracianofEasternMediterraneanbutthereisanevidenceforitsTurolianpresenceinAhmatovo,Bulgaria.
