Habitat Selection and Density-Dependent Relationships in Spatial Occupancy by Male Little Bustards Tetrax tetrax
[摘要] ThisstudyanalyseshabitatselectionbymaleLittleBustardsTetraxtetraxofacentralSpanishpopulationwithintheirdisplaysitesduringtwoconsecutivebreedingseasons.Theareasofsexualdisplaysitesweredeterminedbyapplyingminimumconvexpolygons(MCP)tolocationsofindividualmalesthroughoutthe2001and2002breedingseasons.Habitatselectionwasaddressedbymeansofacompositionalanalysis.Theeffectsofvariablesrelatedtophenologyandtothedensityofconspecificswereexamined,assuminganidealfreedistributionoforganisms.Thespatialdistributionofdisplayareaswasalsoanalysed.DuringbothyearsmaleLittleBustardsshowedasignificantpreferenceforoldandsame-yearfallows,theseofferingbothshelterandfood.Contrarytowhatwasexpected,individualsdidnotselectlowerqualityhabitatswhenconspecificdensityincreasedorwhenareaswereoccupiedearlier,suggestingthatthepopulationwasnotsaturated.Displaysiteswerenotclumped,showingthatinthispopulationtheLittleBustardmaynotemployalekmatingsystem,eventhoughcertainrequirementsofanexplodedleksystem—theinclusioninterritoriesofparticularhabitattypesthatfemalescouldpotentiallyuse—weremet.Ourresultsemphasisetheimportanceofagrariansubstratesindeterminingoccupationbythisspecies,afindingwithdirectimplicationsfortheconservationofpopulationsgiventhattheagrarianlandscapeisonasufficientlylargescaleformanagementmeasurestobeintroduced.
