Stopover Behaviour and Dominance: A Case Study of the Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe
[摘要] Inmigrantsthatoccupyanddefendterritoriesduringmigration,socialstatuscandetermineaccesstopreferredresourcesandalterstopoverbehaviour.ThepotentialvariationinstopoverbehaviourbetweendominantandsubordinateindividualsoftheNorthernWheatearOenantheoenanthe,aterritorialmigrantbirdspecies,wasexaminedatanoffshorestopoverareaontheislandofHelgolandduringthespringof2009.Overall,territorieswereoccupiedanddefendedbydominantbirds(identifiedasthosethatwon≥50%oftheconspecificaggressiveencounters).Dominantbirdsalsoinitiatedmostconspecificaggression.Unabletosettleanddefendaterritory,subordinatestendedtobevagrantandstoppedoverforshorterperiodsoftime.Thisislikelyduetothefactthatsubordinateswerecontinuouslydisplacedbydominants,andthereforehadlessaccesstofood.Subordinatesalsotendedtoforageatlowerrates.NorthernWheatearswereprimarilyfoundinzoneswithahighernumberofshelters,supportingtheideathatavoidanceofpredationplaysaroleinsiteselection.
