Sexual Size Dimorphism, Assortative Mating and Sex Identification in the Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybrida
[摘要] Iexaminedsexualsizedimorphism(SSD)andassortativematingandestimatedadiscriminantfunctionforpredictingsexintheWhiskeredTernChlidoniashybrida,amedium-sizedmarshtern.Imeasuredandmolecularlysexed241breedingadultscapturedinsouthernPolandfrom2005to2010.Malesweresignificantlylargerthanfemalesinallsixmeasurements:totalheadlength,billlength,billdepthatgonys,tarsuslength,winglengthandbodymass.Thelargestdimorphismindex(DI)wasfoundinheadandbillmeasurementsandbodymass.Withinpairs,thetotalheadlength,billlengthandbilldepthwerepositivelycorrelated.Twodiscriminantfunctions,onebasedonthelengthanddepthofthebillandthesecondincludingonlytotalheadlength,showedthesamehighsexclassificationsuccessof95%.DIinWhiskeredTernswasgreaterthaninotherternsprobablyduetostrongersexspecializationinforagingniche.
