West African Mangroves Harbour Millions of Wintering European Warblers
[摘要] Mangroveforestsattractmanyinsectivorousbirds.BirddensityinWestAfricanmangrovesinJanuary–March2014ishigherinAvicennia(21birds/hacanopy)thaninRhizophora(11birds/ha).ThePalearcticspeciesaredominantinthemostnorthernmangroves(14–16°N),butfurthersouthresidentbirdsbecomeasnumerousasmigrants(11–12°N).TheEuropeanReedWarblerAcrocephalusscirpaceusisthemostcommonwintervisitorinWestAfricanmangrovesbetween12and16°N,withanestimatedtotalof4–6millionbirds,whichmayaccountfor30–50%oftheEuropeanpopulation.ThemortalityofEuropeanReedWarblerswhilecrossingtheSaharadesertinspringishigherwhentheirSudan-Guineanwinteringareashavebeendrought-strickenintheprecedingwinter.EuropeanReedWarblerswinteringinmangrovessufferthesamefate,becausemangrovesintheSahelregionmassivelydieoffindroughtyears.
