Great Horned Owl Bubo virginianus Vocalizations and Associated Behaviours
[摘要] Visualobservationsofnocturnalspeciessuchasowlscanbedifficult.Knowledgeofvocalizationsassociatedwithparticularbehavioursisthereforeanextremelyusefultoolinstudyingowlsinthefield.Forthispurpose,IstudiedthevocalizationsandbehavioursoftheGreatHornedOwlBubovirginianus,collectingobservationsonafemalehuman-imprintedindividualandwildpairs.Spectrographically,GreatHornedOwlcallsweredividedintothreemaincategories:hoots,chitters,andsquawks.Thesecategorieswerefurthersubdividedintofivetypesofhoots,fourtypesofchitters,andfivetypesofsquawksbasedoninflection,numberofsyllables,duration,pitch,volume,andbehaviouralcontext.Twotypesofnon-vocalcommunicationwerealsodistinguished:hissesandbillclacking.Althoughowlvocalizationsaregenerallyconsideredinnateandvariationbetweenindividualsshouldnotdifferinbasicmakeupandbehaviouralcontext,furtherverificationonwildowlsisencouraged.
