Home Range Size and Habitat use of the Little Owl Athene noctua in East Poland

[摘要] Homerangesof11LittleOwlsAthenenoctuawerestudiedusingradiotelemetryinagriculturallandscapesofeasternPolandduringthebreedingseasonsof2000–03.Owlsweretrackedfromthetimeofegglayinguntiltheyoungdispersed(15April–22August).Areasofuseweredeterminedforthreeperiods:egglayingandincubationperiod(15April–17May),nestlingperiod(8May–28June),andfledglingperiod(29June–22August).Duringtheegglayingandincubationperioduseareaswereonaverage18ha(SD20,2.5–65.3,n=9),duringthenestlingperiod27.5ha(SD28.2,1.9–95.0,n=18),duringthefledglingperiod9.0ha(SD9.4,1.8–34.1,n=11).Combiningdataforallowlsfromallbreedingseasonperiods,theareaofusewas1.8–95.0ha(average19.9ha,SD=23.2,n=38).Themajorityofowllocationswererecordedinfields(64%,mainlycereals).Fewerlocationswereinfieldswithrowcrops(12%,sugarbeets,potatoes),onbuildings(11%),gardensandorchards(9%),meadowsandpastures(2%),roads(1%)treesandbushes(1%).Duringthebreedingseason,thegrowthofvegetationlimitedtheaccessthatowlshadtotheground.LittleOwlsspent85–95%oftheirtimeatplaceswherevegetationheightdidnotexceed20cm.
