Variation in Working Effort in Danish Little Owls Athene noctua
[摘要] Locomotioniscostlyandshouldthereforeserveapurposeaccordingtotheprincipleofoptimalbehaviour.Inthislight,westudiedvariationinnocturnalactivityofradio-taggedLittleOwlsAthenenoctuainDenmarkwhere,afteradeclineofatleast30years,thespeciesisthreatenedwithextinction.Thestudyisbasedon143one-hoursurveysofbreedingand274surveysofnon-breedingLittleOwls(27territorialindividualson14territories).Workingeffortiscalculatedasthetotallineardistancebetweenallobservedconsecutivetelemetryfixesduringone-hoursurveys(MinimumFlightDistance,MFD).Theeffortpeakedduringthepost-hatchingdependencyperiodwithmalesflyinglongerdistancesandhavingfewerinactivityperiodsthanfemales.Thismightsuggestthatalsoafterhatching,malesprovidemorefoodtothenestthanfemales.Non-breedingowlswerecompletelyinactivein13%ofallsurveys.Probabilityofinactivityincreasedwithheavyrainandwashighestinthemiddleofthenight.Duringthenon-breedingseason,MFDofactiveowlsvariedwithapeakinMarchandalowinDecember,possiblyreflectingseasonalvariationinmetabolicneedsandsocialactivity.Duringthenon-breedingseason,MFDwasslightlyhigherformalesthanforfemales,possiblyreflectinglowerenergeticflightcostsduetolowerweight,andwerehighestatthebeginningandendofnights.
