Flushing Effects and Seasonal Changes on Corticosterone Levels in Adult Long-Eared Owls Asio otus
[摘要] Long-earedOwlsAsiootuswereflushedandcapturedfromcommunalwinterroostsandnestingseasonstoassessbothinitialandstress-inducedcorticosteroneconcentrations.Weexaminedbloodsamplesfrom16malesand8femalesinthewinter,and16malesand11femalesinthebreedingseason.Corticosteroneconcentrationsafterflushingowlsineitherseasonwerenotcorrelatedwiththeelapsedtimefrominitialflushtocapture,suggestingthatthesebirdsdidnotinterpretflushingasstressful.Incontrast,30minofhandlingandrestraintduringbothseasonselicitedrobustincreasesinplasmacortlcosteroneconcentrationsthatdidnotdifferbysex.Althoughstress-inducedcorticosteronelevelsdidnotdifferseasonally,baselinelevelswere50%lowerduringthewintercomparedtobreeding,suggestingthebreedingseasonisamorestressfultime.TheseresultsindicatethatcapturetechniquesusedinthisstudywithLong-earedOwlswereonlystressfulwhensuccessful,andthatinitialcorticosteroneconcentrationsvaryseasonally.
