Hatching Vocalisations in Free-Living Rockhopper Penguins
[摘要] WeanalysedthevocalisationbehaviourofRockhopperPenguinchicksEudypteschrysocomeduringhatching.Hatchingvocalisationrates(innumberperminute)werenotconsistentlyinfluencedbyambientairtemperature.Theydidnotdifferbetweenchickshatchingfromfirst-laideggs(whicharesmaller,hatchsecond,andusuallysufferbroodreduction)andchickshatchingfromsecond-laideggs(whichusuallydevelopintofledglings).Hatchlingsdidnotshowsignificantlydifferentvocalisationratesinthepresenceofasiblingduringhatching.Hatchingvocalisationratesalsodidnotincreasebetweenthepenultimatedayandthelastdaybeforehatching.TheseresultssuggestthatRockhopperPenguinchicksmightgainlittlebenefit(parentalcare)fromincreasedvocalbehaviouratthelateincubationstage.
