Selection of Nest Site and Nesting Material in the Eurasian Nuthatch Sitta europaea
[摘要] Theselectionofnestsitesandnestingmaterialmayhaveimportantimplicationsforavianreproductivebehaviourandperformance.Nestconstructionmayinvolvecostsarisingfromtransportingmaterialthatmaybereducedconsiderablyifnestmaterialsarelocatedclosetothenestsite.EurasianNuthatchSittaeuropaeanestsinournestboxstudyareaaremainlycomposedofpinebarkflakesoralternativelyofstripsofbarkofthewidespreadshrubCistuslaurifolius,withvariableamountsofmudbeingusedforplasteringtheentrance.Severalsmallstreamsrunthroughthearea—anoakQuercuspyrenaicaforestwithafewscatteredpinesPinussylvestris.HereweshowthatNuthatchescollectedpinebarkonlywhennestsitesweresituatedclosetopines,usedmoremudwhenbreedingclosetostreamsandselectednestsitesclosertostreamsthanasympatricspeciesnotusingmud,thePiedFlycatcherFicedulahypoleuca.Nuthatchesusedpinebarkonlywhentherewasapinetreelessthan100mawayfromthenestboxandselectedCistusbarkwhentransportdistancewasgreater.Wesuggestthattheselectionofnestsitesandnestmaterialsinthisspeciesmaybeconstrainedbythecostsoftransportingnestmaterial.
