Large-Scale Monitoring of Waders on Their Boreal and Arctic Breeding Grounds in Northern Europe
[摘要] Large-scaleandpopulation-widemonitoringofwadersontheirborealandarcticbreedinggroundshashithertobeenlacking,mainlybecauselogisticsaretrulychallenginginregionswithfewornithologists,vastareasandfewroads.InNorway,SwedenandFinland(here‘Fennoscandia’)therearenownationalmonitoringschemesinplace,aimedattrackingallbirdspecies,whichallowstrendstobeestimatedfornorthernwaderpopulations.WepresentjointFennoscandianpopulationtrendsfor24waderspecies,coveringtheperiod2002–2013(insomecasessomewhatshortertimeperiods).Thedatastemfrom1263routesinNorway,Finland,andthenortherntwothirdsofSweden,allsituatednorthof58°N.Thisareaofonemillionkm2largelycoincideswiththeborealandarcticpartsofFennoscandia.Thetrendsfoundareratherevenlydistributedbetweenstrongincreasesandstrongdeclines.Trendsdonotdifferbetweenshort-andlong-distancemigrants,nordotheyvaryinrelationtobreedinglatitude.RingedPloverCharadriushiaticula,WoodSandpiperTringaglareola,GreenSandpiperT.ochropusandCommonRedshankT.totanushadsignificantpositivetrends,whereasCommonSnipeGallinagogallinago,RuffPhilomachuspugnaxandSpottedRedshankTringaerythropusweredecliningsignificantlyinnumbers.TrendscouldbecalculatedevenforrelativelyuncommonbreedingbirdssuchasTemminck'sStintCalidristemminckii,EurasianDotterelCharadriusmorinellus,Broad-billedSandpiperLimicolafalcinellus,JackSnipeLymnocryptesminimusandRed-neckedPhalaropePhalaropuslobatus,althoughthesetrendsbuildonfewroutesandindividuals,andthushavelowprecision.ThemonitoringschemesinNorwayandFinlandareexpectedtoincreaseincoverageinthecomingyears,withuptoatotalof1555northernroutesbeingtrackedwhentheschemesarefullydeveloped.ThisshouldenablestillmorerobusttrendestimatesfornorthernwadersontheirFennoscandianbreedinggroundstobecalculatedinthefuture.
