Can Noxious Odours Effectively Protect Clutches of Ground-Nesting Birds?
[摘要] Insearchforanalternativetolethalmethodsofpredatorcontrol,wetestedtheefficacyoftwonoxiousodours,HukinolandHundeschreck,aspredatorrepellentsinfieldexperimentswithartificialandrealnests.Hukinolproducesastronghumanscent,whereasHundeschreckisacombinationofminerals,plantextracts,andpelargonicacid.IntwofieldexperimentswithartificialnestsexposedinopenlandscapesofWesternLowerSaxony,wefoundnoevidenceforalongersurvivalrateofneststreatedwiththeodourrepellents.ThesameresultwasobtainedinapilotstudywithrealnestsofLapwingVanellusvanellus.InthelatterstudyhalfofthenestsweretreatedwithHukinol,theotherswereusedascontrols.Insummary,bothchemicalsshowlittlepromiseinreducingpredation-dependentnestfailureinground-nestingbirds.
