Habitat use, Home Ranges and Census Techniques in the Black Woodpecker Dryocopus martius in the Alps
[摘要] WefocuseduponhabitatuseandhomerangesizevariationinanalpinepopulationoftheBlackWoodpeckerDryocopusmartius.Habitatselectionanalysesshowedthatthedominantlocalforesttype,i.e.MountainPinePinusmugouncinata,wassignificantlyavoided.ScotsPinePinussylvestrisstandswerepositivelyselected,likelybecauseoftheabundanceofants;BeechFagussylvaticawaschosenfornestingandroosting.Ahighlevelofflexibilityinrangingbehaviourandhabitatselection,withremarkableamong-andwithin-individualvariability,wasrecorded.Weassessedthereliabilityofcensustechniquesbycomparingresultsobtainedbyradio-telemetryandterritorymapping,whichshowedthatterritorymappingfailedtoidentifyallpairsdetectedthroughradio-tracking.Severalbehaviouralandecologicaltraitsmaybiascountresultsirrespectiveofthemethodsused.MappingmethodsareparticularlyineffectivebecausetheBlackWoodpeckerisweaklyterritorial:inourstudyareahomerangeoverlapwasratherhighandnoterritorialdefencewasdetected.Basedontheseresults,thepotentialoftheBlackWoodpeckerasecologicalindicatorisquestioned.
