Adaptive and Non-Adaptive Explanations for Hatching Failure in Eggs of the Red-Legged Partridge Alectoris rufa
[摘要] Hatchingsuccesshasbeenconsideredoneofthemainfactorsassociatedwithfitnessinbirds.Hatchingfailurecouldbetheresultoftwoindependentevents,infertilityanddeathofembryos,whichhavenotbeenindependentlyconsideredinmoststudies.Ourstudyanalyseshatchingfailurepatterninaprecocialbird,theRed-leggedPartridgeAlectorisrufa.Intrialswithcaptivebirds,wetestedeffectsofeggsize,layingorderandclutchsizeoninfertilityandembryodeathcontrollingformaternalconditionandage.Onthebasisofpreviousstudieswepredictedthatlightereggsshowhigherratesofinfertilityand/orembryomortality.Wealsopredictedthatinfertilityprevailsinfirstandlast-laideggs.
