Sexual Dimorphism and Diet Segregation in the Black Skimmer Rynchops niger
[摘要] Sexualsegregationduringforagingiscommoninbirdsandmayoccuratdifferenttemporalandspatialscales.InthisstudyweexploredthedegreeofsexualsegregationintheBlackSkimmerRynchopsnigerbystudyingthespeciesandsizesofpreyconsumedbyeithersex.Moreoverweassessedthedistributionofthesexesoverthestudyarea.WedevelopedamultivariatetoolforsexdeterminationinBlackSkimmersbyusingmorphometricmeasurementsfrombirdsofknownsex.Birdscapturedwithmistnetsandmuseumskinswereanalysed.ThesexofbirdswasdeterminedbyPCRamplificationofDNAorbygonadinspection.Thefishpreyremainsobtainedfromspontaneousregurgitationsofcapturedbirdswereusedtoestimatetotallengthandweightofconsumedfishprey.Thebulkofthedietofbothsexeswasgenerallycomposedofthesamespecies(mostlysilversidesOdontesthesspp.),butmalesconsumedlargerpreythanfemales.Thesexratiointhelagoonwasstronglyskewedtowardsfemales.Wediscusstheimplicationsofsexualsegregationforhabitatandspeciesconservationmeasures.
