Sex Identification of Jack Snipe Lymnocryptes minimus by Discriminant Analysis of Morphometric Measurements
[摘要] JackSnipeLymnocryptesminimusisasmallwadershowingsexualmonomorphisminplumageandsomedimorphisminsize.Tostudywhetherparametersofbodysizemaybeusedtoreliablysexindividualsofthisspecies,adiscriminantfunctionanalysiswasappliedtoasetofmorphometrictraitsmeasuredinbirdscaughtduringmigrationandthewinteringperiodinnorthernPoland.BirdsweresexedmolecularlybasedonsizedifferencesinCHD-linkedsequencesfromW-andZ-chromosomes.Malesweresignificantlylargerthanfemalesinwinglength,headlength,skulllength,billdepth,billwidthandthelengthofmiddletoewithclaw,whilefemaleshadlongerbills.Alltraitsexceptforbillwidthwerehighlyrepeatable.Astepwisediscriminantfunctionanalysisselectedwinglength,skulllength,billlengthandbilldepthasthebestdiscriminatorsofsexinJackSnipe.Thediscriminantfunctionbasedonthesefourtraitsenabledreliablesexingof99%ofindividuals.Thealternativefunction,excludingwinglength,whichmaynotalwaysbeavailableformeasurement,showed96.7%classificationsuccess.SuchveryhighsuccessinsexidentificationbyadiscriminantanalysisofmorphometrictraitsmaypromotethisapproachasanalternativetomolecularsexingtechniquesinJackSnipe,whennon-invasivesamplingisrequired.
