Stopover Strategy of Adult and Juvenile Red Knots Calidris c. canutus in the Puck Bay, Southern Baltic

[摘要] ForRedKnotsCalidrisc.canutussandycoastsofthesouthernBalticseemtobealowqualitystopoversite,becauseofunpredictablefeedingconditionsandalowdensityofmolluscs.ObservationcollectedinthePuckBay,Poland,suggestthatKnotsfeedmainlyonNereissp.,Gammarussp.,smallsizedHydrobiasp.andsmallinsectstakenfromwetsand.Among1471Knotsringed27.8%ofjuvenilesand10.5%ofadultswereretrappedfewdaysafterthefirstcapture,whichindicatesthatthemajorityhadashortstayandapparentlydepartedwithsmallenergeticreserves.InspiteofpoorfeedingconditionsthefueldepositionrateoftheKnotsinautumn(adults:2.4gperd,juveniles:2.7gperd)wassimilartothatobservedintheDutchWaddenSeaandtheBalticcoastofSESweden.ItissuggestedthatKnotsareabletoaccumulatebodystoresdespitelowfoodqualityanddensitybecausethelackoftidesallowthemtoforagewithoutinterruption,andbecausethereisnoadditionalenergeticcostrelatedtoincreasinggizzardsize.
