Carotenoid-Based Masks in the European Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis Reflect Different Information in Males and Females
[摘要] Sexualselectionmayplayanimportantroleintheevolutionofcarotenoid-basedsignals.Accordingtotheparasite-mediatedsexualselectionhypothesis,organismhealth,parasiteresistanceandtheexpressionofornamentsarelinked.Whilesomestudieshaveanalysedtheexpressionofmalecarotenoid-basedornamentsinrelationtoparasitesandimmunesystemcapacities,fewstudieshavefocusedoncarotenoid-derivedcolourpatchesexpressedinbothsexes.Weanalysedtherelationshipsbetweenendoparasite(bloodandsystemicparasites)loads,haematologicalvaluesandthecomponentsofredmaskcolourinwildEuropeanGoldfinchesCardueliscarduelis,aspecieswithacarotenoid-basedfacialmaskinbothsexes.Both,malesandfemaleswereassessedforimmunequalityandfacemaskexpression.Facemaskcolorationwassexuallydichromatic,maleshavelessorangemasksthanfemales.TheyellowcomponentofthemaskshowedlessintensityinfemalesinfectedwithHaemoproteusbloodparasites.Thetotalleukocytecountwasinverselycorrelatedtotheyellowcomponentofthemaskinfemales,suggestingthatmaskcolourreflectstheimmunestatusoffemalesduringthebreedingseason.IsosporainfectionappearedtolimittheUVreflectionoftheredmaskoffemales.
