Molecular Verification of the Subspecies Status of the Mauritanian Spoonbill Platalea Leucorodia Balsaci
[摘要] In1974R.deNauroisandF.RouxproposedthatthedistinctmorphologyofEurasianSpoonbillsPlatalealeucorodiabreedingonoffshoreislandsintheBancd'Arguin,Mauritania,incomparisonwiththesympatricallywinteringnorthwestEuropeanbreedingSpoonbillsPlatalealeucorodialeucorodia,justifiesrecognitionasaseparatesubspeciesPlatalealeucorodiabalsaci.ThisproposalisexaminedhereonthebasisofvariationinnuclearDNA,microsatellitesidentifiedearlierforP.minorandPajaja.WeshowthatthereissignificantvariationbetweenSpoonbillsbreedinginMauritania(n=25)andthesympatricallywinteringconspecificsbreedingintheDutchWaddenSea(n=105).Ofthetotalgeneticvariationamongthe130individuals,6.3%isattributabletovariationbetweenthetwobreedingareas(93.7%ofthevariationiswithinbreedingareas).PairwiseFSTvaluesshowedlowgeneticdifferentiation(FST'Slt;0.012)amongbreedingcolonieswithinTheNetherlands.ThelevelofgeneticdifferentiationindicatesthatthelevelofgeneflowbetweenTheNetherlandsandMauritaniaismuchlower(∼4–5individuals/generation)thanamongtheDutchcoloniesonseparateWaddenSeaislands.Fieldobservationsonindividuallycolour-markedbirdsfromTheNetherlandsindeedsuggestextensivedispersalwithinnorthwestEurope,withsomeintrogressionofleucorodiagenesintothebalsacipopulation.Thelevelofmicrosatellitedistinctivenessbetweensympatricpopulationsofthetwosubspeciesissimilartothatrecordedforsubspeciesofothermigrantbirds,andassuchjustifiesthesubspeciesstatusoftheMauritanianSpoonbill.
