Human Immunodeficiency Virus Types 1 and 2: Sero-prevalence and Risk Factors Among a Nigerian Rural Population of Women of Child-bearing Age
[摘要] BACKGROUND:Humanimmunodeficiencyvirus(HIV)stillcontinuestoravagetheworldsinceitsdiscoveryaboutthreedecadesagoinspiteofglobalinterventionefforts.Womenarethemostinfected,majorityofwhicharefoundinsub-saharanAfrica.OBJECTIVE:Wesetouttodeterminethesero-prevalenceofHIV-1andHIV-2andtoevaluateriskfactorsamongwomenofchild-bearingageinObiLocalGovernmentArea,NasarawaState,Nigeria.METHODS:Inacross-sectionalstudy,bloodsampleswererandomlycollectedbyvenepunc-turefrom426womenaged16-40years,betweenFebruaryandApril2002;afterhavingobtainedethicalclearance,informedconsent,structuredquestionnaireswereself-administered.rLAVEIA(Bio-RadLaboratories,USA)andvironostikamicroelisa(OrganonTeknika,USA)werebothusedforinitialandconfirmatorytestsrespectively.RESULTS:Overall48(11.3%)weresero-positiveforHIV.Ofthese,38(8.9%)hadHIV-1and10(2.3%)hadHIV-2.Thoseaged16-20yearshadthehighestprevalencerateof13.9%(38).SubjectswhohadhistoryofSTIsandmultiplesexpartnersweresignificantlymorelikelytobeinfected.CONCLUSION:Thehighprevalencewithaworsesituationintheyoungagebracketsunder-scoresthenecessityforsustainableinterventioninitiativesamongwomenwiththeyouthasaspecialfocus.EffortsforvaccinedevelopmentshouldtakeintoconsiderationtherealityofHIV-2inNigeria
