Incidence of Streptococcus Pneumoniae Infections Among Patients Attending Tuberculosis Clinics in Ekpoma, Nigeria.

[摘要] Pulmonarypneumoniaandtuberculosisarebothlowerrespiratorytractinfectionsthataffectalmostallclassofpeoplemostlyindevelopingcountries.FewcurrentanduptodatedataareavailableonthetrendoftheabovediseaseconditionsinEkpomaanditsenvirons.ToassesstheincidenceofStreptococcuspneumoniaeinfectionamongpatientsattendingtuberculosisclinicsinEkpomaNigeria.AlphahemolyticorganismsonchocolateandBloodagarfrom330sputumsamplesrandomlyselectedfrompatientsattendingtuberculosisclinicsinEkpoma,suspectedtobeStreptococcuspneumoniaewereidentifiedusingbilesolubilityandoptochinsensitivitytestwhileMycobacteriumtuberculosiswereidentifiedbytheZielNelsontechniqueforacidandalcoholfastbacilli.Outofthe330samplesexamined,21(6.4%)and81(84.6%)ofStreptococcuspneumoniaeandMycobacteriumtuberculosisrespectivelyweredetected.Outof144/186male/femaleexamined,15(10.4%),6(3.2%),and48(33.3%),33(17.7%)ofStreptococcuspneumoniaeandMycobacteriumtuberculosisfrommale/femalesamplesrespectively.Agegroup1-9yearswasmostlyaffectedbyStreptococcuspneumoniae,agegroup50-59yearswhichhadhighincidenceofStreptococcuspneumoniaeandMycobacteriumtuberculosisrespectively.Theoccupationalgroupidentifiedas‘others’whichincludemostlychildren,hadthehighestincidenceofbothStreptococcuspneumoniaeandMycobacteriumtuberculosisfollowedbyfarmers.TherelevanceofaccurateandcurrentdataontheinfectiontrendofStreptococcuspneumoniaeandMycobacteriumtuberculosisrespectivelycannotbeoveremphasized.
