[摘要] Abstract:Complementaryfeedingisgraduallyreplacingtraditionalexclusivebreast-feedingofinfantsinmostpartsofNigeria.Thisstudyassessedcomparatively,theserumtotalcalciumandinorganicphosphateconcentrationsinexclusivelybreastfedinfantsandthoseonmixeddiet.Bloodsamplewerecollectedfrom200infantsagedbetween3and6months,madeupof100exclusivelybreastfedinfants(EBFI)and100infantsonmixeddiet(MDI).Serumtotalcalciumandinorganicphosphateweredeterminedspectrophotometrically.TheEBFIhassignificantlyhigherserumlevelsoftotalcalciumandinorganicphosphatecomparedtotheMDI(Plt;0.01,Plt;0.001)respectively.TherewerestatisticallysignificantdecreasesintheconcentrationsofserumtotalcalciumandinorganicphosphatewithincreaseintheagesofboththeEBFIandMDI(Plt;0.01,Plt;0.05)respectively.AnageadjustedcomparisonoftheserumtotalcalciumandinorganicphosphatelevelsbetweentheEBFIandMDI,showedsignificantlyhigherconcentrationsintheEBFIthantheMDI(Plt;0.05).SerumtotalcalciumandinorganicphosphatemaybehigherinEBFIthanMDI.Thismayresultfromhormonalchangesinthemotherswhichensureasufficientsupplyofcalciumandinorganicphosphatetothebreastmilkandthelowbioavailabilityofcalciumandphosphorousincomplementaryfoodsusedindevelopingcountries
