Robert S. Lorimer : interiors and furniture design
[摘要] Chapter 1, entitled "The Scottish Tradition",builds on the early twentieth-century consensus thatLorimer had resuscitated a moribund Scottish traditionof design. While critics have examined the Scottishroots of Lorimer's architecture, the native sources ofhis furniture design have received little correspondingattention. This section aims to demonstrate the waysin which Lorimer's interest in historical Scottisharchitecture and woodwork informed his interior andfurniture design. In particular, his use of vernacularand regional forms is juxtaposed with the revival oftraditional types and motifs he shared withcontemporary designers.Complementing a concern with indigenous design isLorimer's interest in continental antique furniture.Lorimer's personal collection, and those of hisclients, may be identified as formative in thedevelopment of his design. Chapter 2 examines the mainsources, against the social background of Scottishfurniture and interior design during the period. Thecircumstances of the commissions discussed here revealLorimer's combination of the roles of architect andinterior designer, the focus of Chapter 3 on Lorimer'swide-ranging activities at Balmanno Castle, Perthshire.Chapter 4 seeks to redress the balance betweenLorimer as traditionalist and agent for reform, particularly in the area of design education. It willbe argued that his own design innovations weresecondary to the latter achievement. His attitudes toindustrial design and handcraft are considered here, which leads to the final chapter on workmanship. Thissection is comprised of an in-depth study of Lorimer'sworking relationship with the executants of hisdesigns; the variant use of handwork and machinework isdiscussed, and finally some attempt is made to discernand acknowledge the peculiar contributions of designerand workmen.
