Good Moves for Bad Habits: Interrupting Normative Practice To Disrupt Racialized Inequity
[摘要] Racializedgapsineducationareproducedbynormativeteaching,which describesthepracticesofthemajorityofteachers,themajorityofthetime.Yet,teachersclaimignoranceandinnocenceintheproductionofinequity,leadingtraditionalapproaches tofocusonracialbeliefs.Instead,Isuggestthatnormativeteachingpractices are theenactmentofracismand bestunderstoodashabitsofwhiteness.Whitenessisasystemofexclusiondesignedforthepurposeofdomination.Habitsareactionsandbehaviorsthatareenactedwithoutconsciousthought.Habitsofwhitenessarewaysofbeingorientedtowardssocialandeconomicdominancethatareroutine,default,andautomatic.Fortunately,thereisaprocessfor interveningonhabits.Thisresearchfocusesontwosteps:raisingawarenessoftheharmdonebynormativeteachingandidentifying,naming,anddescribingalternativeteachingmoves.Interruptinghabitsisasteptowardsdisruptingracializedinequityineducation.
