Addendum

[摘要] A pertinent British paper on the chemotherapeutic action of dyes in typhus infections of mice (32), published in 1946, escaped the attention of the authors until after this manuscript was accepted for publication. An impressive number of thionine and related dyes were tested for effectiveness against intranasally induced infection with murine typhus in mice, thereby considerably extending the total list of compounds subjected to test. With two exceptions, the results observed were in agreement with those reported for the same compounds in the present paper. The exceptions are: new methylene blue (methylene blue N) which we found to be inactive; and brilliant cresyl blue which we found to be highly active. In addition, the British authors report the activity of one thiazine dye, 3-diethylamino-7-di-n-butylamino phenazthionium chloride hydrochloride, which we did not test. Also, they demonstrate a correlation between the in vitro rickettsiacidal activity of the compounds and the in vivo effect observed.
