Responses of Human Subjects to Vaccines in Saline-in-Mineral Oil Emulsion

[摘要] A total of 3.0 billion Shigella paradysenteriae bacterial cells in saline or totals of 0.6 and 1.2 billion cells emulsified in mineral oil were administered to groups of human subjects. The subjects experienced slight but similar systemic reactions; increases in mouse protective antibody titers were of low order and similar in the saline and oil vaccine groups. One abscess attributable and one possibly attributable to the oil vaccine developed out of a total of 140 oil injection sites. Under the conditions in which they were tested in humans, the oil emulsion vaccines did not show a marked improvement of the antigenicity to toxicity ratios.
