The Influence of Adrenal Cortical Extract on Immunological Phenomena In Vivo

[摘要] The data presented indicate a lack of effect of aqueous adrenal cortical extract on the union of antigen and antibody in the circulating blood of the rabbit. Despite the previous injection of this extract the injection of antigen into immunized animals resulted in a marked drop of complement, granulocytes, and circulating antibody. From these results and those of other studies it appears that the effects of these hormones on allergic reactions are due not to interference with the in vivo union of antigen and antibody, but probably are connected with their effects on the reactivity of mesenchymal tissues.Occasionally the mere handling and bleeding, or injection of saline, “aqueous alcohol,” or adrenal cortical extract into normal rabbits produced a lymphopenia and sharp decrease in serum complement. The mechanism of this effect is unknown.
