Four New Provisional Serotypes of Shigella

[摘要] Four serotypes which have the biochemical characteristics of typical shigellae are described. It is believed that these serotypes should be considered for possible future addition to the Shigella schema, but for the present should remain sub judice . Cultures of one of the serotypes did not produce acid from mannitol and hence should be considered for addition to subgroup A ( Shigella dysenteriae subgroup) of the schema. Cultures of the other three serotypes ferment mannitol, but were not related serologically to members of the Shigella flexneri group and therefore should be considered for addition to the Shigella boydii subgroup (subgroup C). The serologic relationships of the new serotypes to known shigellae and to Escherichia coli O groups are described.
