On the Agglutinative Titration of Antimeningococcal Sera, Types I and III with the Encapsulated Bacteria

[摘要] It has been demonstrated in this paper that the antibodies which elicit the reaction of capsular swelling with types I and III meningococcus also take part in the agglutinative reaction between antimeningococcal sera and the homologous organisms. It was found possible to titrate the specific capsular antibodies even in the presence of somatic antibodies through the use of suspensions of organisms in which the capsules have been preserved. The capsules may be kept intact for some time by using formaldehyde as a preservative rather than phenol.
