Antigenic Character of Heated Protein

[摘要] When the first studies on precipitin were made, investigation of its thermoresistance was begun. In Nuttall's book on Blood Immunity and Blood Relationship (1) there is a table containing the early observations on the destruction of the precipitable substance by heat made by Tchistovich, Eisenberg, Nuttall, Linossier and Lemoine. Nuttall writes: “The precipitable substances in normal serum possess about the same resisting power as the precipitins. The results with milk are in flat contradiction.” At the suggestion of Nuttall, G. S. Graham-Smith tested the thermoresistance of the precipitinogen employed in his own experiments and came to the conclusion that “an antiserum can be exposed to a greater degree of heat than its corresponding serum without injury and the precipitum producing property is completely destroyed in the latter at a lower temperature.”
