Chemical and Immunological Studies of the Pneumococcus
[摘要] By ultrafiltration, pneumococcus culture filtrates of types I, II, III, and a nonvirulent atypical strain (I) were conveniently concentrated a hundred-fold. At the same time, from 97.4 to 99.3 per cent of the nitrogen was eliminated. Subsequently, by repeated fractional precipitations with alcohol, type-specific and species-specific polysaccharides were obtained in good yield and in a relatively high state of purification. These type-specific substances possessed greater activity in precipitation with immune serum than those prepared by other methods, and the type I regularly induced immunity in mice.
