An Immunologic Comparison of Cell Components of Shigella Dysenteriae Type 2

[摘要] In a comparison of whole cells, cell walls, protoplasts, protoplast membranes, cytoplasm and the isolated somatic antigen of Shigella dysenteriae 2, marked serologic cross-reactions were obtained. Following mild alkaline hydrolysis of whole cells or various cell components, material which was related to the somatic antigen of the organism was obtained by acetone precipitation. Certain differences in biologic activity of the materials derived from cell walls and cytoplasm suggested that the immunologically-specific polysaccharide is present in the cytoplasm but is bound in a relatively inactive form. The significance of these findings is discussed.
