Results from the Use of the Blood Clot Method of Immunization
[摘要] Zinsser and Grinnell in 1925[2][1] reported a novel method for the immunization of horses against pneumococcus, and suggested its application in the case of other bacteria. When this procedure came to our attention, we were immediately interested in the possibility of its use, particularly in the immunization of horses against certain types of streptococci, pneumococci and other bacteria. We have used the method for the immunization of horses against different strains of streptococci, pneumococci, the green producing diplococcus isolated by Tunnicliff from cases of measles, and a combination of B. coli and streptococci. The essential feature in the blood clot method is the injection of whole oxalated blood to which the bacteria have been added, either immediately before injection or sometime previous, together with sufficient calcium chloride to induce the formation of a clot within a few minutes. It was the idea of the originators that the toxic factor from the pneumococcus developed when the pneumococci grew in the blood under conditions analogous to those prevailing in pneumonia, although they were undecided whether this toxic factor was antigenic.
