Some Properties of Two Active Substances Contained in Certain Scarlatinal Streptococcus Filtrates
[摘要] Some strains of scarlatinal streptococci produce at least two highly active substances which appear to be toxins because they evoke the production of antibodies which neutralize according to the law of multiple proportions. Toxin “A” has not been found to differ from toxins produced by other strains of scarlatinal streptococci. Toxin “B” is active in only a few individuals, who may be negative to “A,” and differs in other respects: It is thermolabile, is less stable in storage, is more easily dialyzed, and is precipitated by lower concentrations of ammonium sulfate or sodium chlorid than toxin “A.” It does not appear to produce a binding toxoid; it is produced somewhat earlier than “A” in broth but less is formed in a simple synthetic medium.Neither “A” nor “B” is adsorbed by moderate amounts of kaolin; their corresponding antitoxins are not adsorbed by washed homologous cocci.
