A Test for the Therapeutic Value of Antipneumococcus Serum

[摘要] Although it is now generally recognized that certain antibacterial sera may have therapeutic value when employed under proper conditions, it has been found very difficult to devise methods to detect the relative therapeutic value of various samples of any of these apparently effective sera. For instance, the experience of a number of clinicians now indicates that the employment of large amounts of antipneumococcus serum type I is useful in the treatment of cases of lobar pneumonia due to infection with the homologous microörganism. It is not likely, however, that equal amounts of serum derived from different horses and prepared in different ways will all have the same efficiency in the treatment of patients suffering from pneumonia.
