The Effect of Normal and Immune Staphylococcus Rabbit Serums on the Action of Staphylococcus Bacteriophage
[摘要] d'Herelle (1) has stated that body fluids and tissues have no inhibitory effect on the action of the bacteriophage. Applebaum and MacNeal (2), seeking for an effective therapeutic agent against staphylococci, have found that the action of bacteriophage is inhibited by animal serums and purulent exudates. It is the purpose of this report to confirm the findings of Applebaum and MacNeal and to show, in addition, that the serums of rabbits, immune to staphylococcus toxin, do not have an inhibitory effect on the action of the bacteriophage on certain strains of staphylococci. As reported elsewhere (3), three strains of staphylococci isolated from ocular sources have been studied in detail. These three strains seem typical of types of staphylococci isolated from a variety of human lesions. Strain Ha, from a chronic indurated blepharitis produced a broth filtrate that kills rabbits when injected intravenously in doses of 0.1 to 1.0 cc. per kilogram of body weight.
