Studies on the Antigenic Properties of the Ultraviruses

[摘要] Though viricidal antibodies were easily demonstrated in the sera from human and monkey poliomyelitis convalescents, no evidence could be elicited to indicate that these antibodies are related to antibacterial antibodies. The presence of complement fixing and precipitating antibodies specific for the virus could not be demonstrated even in sera from hyperimmunized poliomyelitis convalescent monkeys. On the other hand, evidence was obtained which strongly suggests that the antibodies parallel antitoxins in their behavior. Like neutral toxin-antitoxin, neutral serum-virus mixtures may be rendered infective again by dilution with physiological saline solution. Moreover, while an undiluted serum of sufficient titer may render a given quantity of virus material immediately innocuous when such a serum is diluted a certain minimum of time is required to accomplish the same result.
