HISTORY'S LESSONS

[摘要] The article in this issue by Dr. Harry Elam more than makes its point, and the point is more than worth being made at this particular moment in American history. What is more, I regret to say that, though the remarks are heavily psychological in nature, a large number of our psychiatrists also need to understand, as do pediatricians, the evolutionary process that has resulted in what Dr. Elam calls "malignant cultural deprivation." The sad fact is that just about all of us, even some of our best historians, whom one imagines ought to know better, find it hard to think about what went on hundreds of years ago-in Africa, on the high seas between Africa and America, and finally, in this nation of ours, founded in protest against monarchist authoritarianism, yet able for decade after decade to sanction an explicit and devastating kind of slavery.
