SIGNIFICANCE OF SPLIT PRODUCTS OF FIBRIN IN SERUM OF THE NEWBORN
[摘要] The paper of Stiehm and Clatanoff,1 in this issue of Pediatrics, examines in a clear and highly productive fashion an extremely important problem in the management of critically ill patients and in the pathophysiology of coagulation. Hemorrhage in infection is a well established phenomenon; and, in the newborn with so-called purpura fulminans, it may be as disastrous as the now nearly forgotten Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome. The infusion of suspended particles of the size of bacteria, or of soluble endotoxin, into experimental animals may also be associated with profound bleeding, and this has recently been ascribed to thrombocytopenia which may result from reticuloendothelial sequestration of particle-induced platelet clumps.
