IATROGENIC DISEASE

[摘要] SOME revealing papers from a Symposium under the heading "Iatrogenic Disease" appear in this issue. The rapidly increasing array of therapeutic agents affords many opportunities for the physician to do harm as well as to benefit the patient. This precarious position is not new to the physician, but in the sincere desire to rid the patient of his ailment or to relieve his symptoms, one is inclined to overlook the possibility that the treatment may be harmful.Full realization of this is difficult to acquire in an age when disease is seldom observed to run its natural course without the influence of what is mistakenly termed "heroic" therapy, often recommended as intensive or energetic.
